RM Information

Postby stars » Sun Jan 20, 2008 12:39 am

Did you know the default bios password for an RM computer is "RM" ?

The next generation of community connect may have an entire new locked-down interface.

The application behind RM Tutor is or used to be "Netop", I think it is now "Net Support", it's just re-branded for RM workstations.

Most RM administrators have no idea what they are doing because they use this RM management console. They have no idea about how to roll out installation
packages beyond the realms of RM because they simply don't have the experience of working in a real networked enviroment.

The RM web filter can be bypassed by pressing the stop button really quickly.

RM lock down machines not to annoy you. The reason for it is to reduce profile usage so that your computers load faster.

RM software sometimes accounts for up to 80% of CPU usage on the average desktop. This really decreases performance.

It is cheaper for a school not to use RM software, it is actually not needed in this day and age.

Its not pathetic, its true. A really good admin could build a network himself and handle it properly without RM.

I COULD, alot of RM Staff were taught how to, NOT by RM, Obviously, but we were taught elsewhere, but i supposed it is true for SOME rm admins, so i see your point.

Alot of people seem to think IT Techies in schools are stupid.. We have got 3 and they certainly know a thing or two about the system, they had 3 new servers installed, up and running by themsleves in hours after replacing the old ones... They must know something about RM & networking.

No, not all IT techs are stupid, but there are some which are undeniably so. That, or they're ignorant. Or just lazy.

To be fair though, you have to remember that an IT tech's job adds up to wayyyy more than securing a network, and it's worth remembering that they have a pretty stressful workload, especially in schools.

So give kudos to your network admin next time you see them, they might just appreciate it.

I don't think my schools admin likes the RM software very much. Its slow, crashy and crap.
Asked him why we have and said it was the headmasters desision (hes a retard)

also RM computers build quality is really poor.
my schools new ones are already starting to fall apart. (less than 6 months and already 7 dead ones with fried mobos)

Most IT techs find it's already installed when they turn up. And RM have been in the education sector of the UK for a long time; I don't see that changing anytime soon.

It's not that bad... :P
