Network/Internet Access

Postby Serav » Sat Apr 07, 2007 10:14 am

With the help of a friend I have learned how to free up most of the restrictions on my school account. For example I can permanently install programs on computers (the only caveat being I must do it one computer at a time). Using this in conjunction with hex edited executables such as regedit.exe and taskmgr.exe means I have almost as much freedom in school as I do at home in terms of what programs I use.

However even with this there is one restriction I can't seem to shake. Even though IE and MS Office both have internet access no program that I bring in can access the internet, though they can access network shares. I assumed it must be blocking access to the internet based on something such as port number, application name or type of data. However having renamed the firefox executable and instructed it to use the standard ports it still doesn't have internet access. The strange thing is that when i ping a website, such as amazon, using the cmd (renamed mspaint.exe) and ping.exe (which i brought in myself and therefore suffers from the same lack of internet access) all the packets time out but an ip address is resolved. Which shouldn't happen if there is absolutely no connection.

At this point I am just confused and was wondering if anyone could shed futher light on the situation.

As far as I know, the way that your internet access is blocked is that it chages your proxy server to 'disabled'- i.e. the proxy server address is actually set to that.

Try checking your proxy settings- I might be completely wrong :D

Hmm I don't think it's that because it stops pretty much every single app I've tried- aside from another web browser which might well work.

Try using firefox to access the net at school and see what happens

Firefox portable has failed as well when i tried it. This is why I thought internet was possibly allowed on a per application basis which would explain why firefox, which has practically the same traffic as IE, does not work. The only thing I can think of trying next is bringing in an old version of opera which can identify itself as IE for greater compatibility.

plug it in via usb, reboot machine, rape the bios key, if it asks for the bios password 9/10 its still just "rm" without "", change the boot squence to ur hdd, might need to make sure drivers r installed then save n restart, then it shud boot from ur external...but dont most externals require an external power supply :s or can u use like use an ipod lol?
