Web Hosting

Postby Quaon » Sun Nov 02, 2008 3:42 pm

So I have been roped into a project by a friend of mine, and he needs a website. I was wondering if any of you have suggestions for a good host? Money does matter, i have a large budget. It would have to have some pretty good options, and a near perfect uptime. Any suggestions?

Where do you want it, and what scale are you looking at?

I would want it in the US, and it would be a simple, maybe 10 page site. Small business esque lets say.

Somthing that size, you might even want to look at free hosting. 000webhost is a good one, and they've also got a premium hosting service.
Code: Select all
http://www.000webhost.com/upgrade

Has all the usualy stuff, like SSH in the paid hosting. Unlimited bandwidth/space offers are always a bit questionable, but they're counting on the fact most sites use less than 100MB.

I'm afraid I don't really know much about US hosting, I'm UK..

NEVER go for a free web host.
There are too many reasons to write them all here.

Im with Phiber on this, I dont want the possible problems with a free host. Besides, they are giving me the money to spend on this, why not use it?

Free hosting isn't that bad, if you get a good one, and you site is small. The biggest problem is that when something goes wrong, you've got no support, and no one to complain to.

The only US host I can recommend 3FN, a friend of mine hosts a large website with them (dedicated server, brilliant if you've got the cash for it), and has given very good reviews of them.

There is no such thing as unlimited. If they can really provide unlimited, I'll take an account and throw approx let's say 2000 TERAbytes of download traffic from the server.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that company is not good, I'm just saying there is no such thing as "unlimited" in the web hosting world.

No need, it's not spammy in that form and you're a longtime member of the forum.

Sort of like 'unlimited' broadband. It just means that they don't give an exact limit. If you look in their ToS/AUP, you'll see that if your activities are disrupting other users (using all the disk/bandwidth), they will kick you off.

In the end, I ended up not doing the job because they refused to give me a copy of dreamweaver to do it. Sure I could torrent it, but thats not the point.

I do appreciate the input though, as Im sure other people have/will.

Why do you say it's crap? :P

You won't get the ultimate control and flexibility you get with notepad++, and it's more expensive, but it's a hell of a lot quicker when you need to churn sites out reasonably quickly...

The code Dreamweaver creates is often really ugly to work with, the cost that you mentioned (yes, we can pirate it, but that's a pain). It's also very heavy, when I open up one of my scripts, I was it to load instantly, rather than waiting for Dreamweaver to load. Even once it does, the interface seems sluggish. Oh, and the fact it decides to run a silent update, without notifiying you, and then sits there in your system tray for the next 20 minutes downloading crap.

Perhaps the Mac version is better, but Dreamweaver has way to much unneeded crap in it. With a decent set of templates, you can throw toghether a good site fast without it...

(vi ftw?)
