My bad!

Postby neocortex » Mon Apr 30, 2007 8:22 pm

First of all, an apology, to the mods and admins of the site, for... not making my first post in this forum.

I am NeoCortex. I am from Scotland, and I am Systems and Network Administrator in an independent school. I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Cisco Certified Networking Associate. I have been in IT for approx 9 years. Although I specialise in systems admin, I like to consider myself a jack-of-all-trades, skilled, but not quite 'leet in web development, scripting, .net programming and reverse engineering.

I came across this site whilst searching for some insider info on the new CC4 platform. My school uses CC3 (albeit not my choice, it was there when I got there - honest :P ). I find this site very interesting, as I can relate to the subject matter, and the ventures of the community. I seek to educate...and be educated! At my school, I employ an 'ethical hacking policy'. Students who have an active interest in IT and computing, I encourage them indulges themselves, provided they let me know their intentions.

Although I run a 'tight ship', my users (particulalrly the students) are happy as they get, pretty much what they want (within reason) and what they do not have, I make them understand why - the bigger picture.

My knowledge (<- understand what this statement means, before you ask - 'how do you hack CC3?') is open to everyone who wants to learn.

Your approach is definetly the correct way of dealing with students CC usage. Feel free to participate in the forums as much as you want. An experienced and active admin can contribute a lot to our small community.
I wish you all the best.

Please do not misunderstand me. The kids do not run riot around the network. I just don;t belive that systems security should be so tight that it hinders or compromises the learning of students. Computer systems, security and what not, to me, all classify as part of learning.

Think about it, little Jane bloggs fancies a career in computing, being a techie, and admin, a developer...whatever - what better place for her to learn about what is involved and gain some practical skills in the field - marvellous.

I have already included ethical hacking as part of the schools Advanced Higher Computing course.

Maybe by sentence was wrongly worded. I meant let them try to find weaknesses in your network's security, without impeding them all the time with restrictions and things. :)

You really do have the right idea there. Cos to be fair, if you don't let the students find the loopholes in your network, someone will. Someone probably a lot worse too. And I hate it too when security gets in the way of your work and functionality (Vista anyone?).

Wish I was in your school

Got a website to verify that claim? Not that I don't believe you, but...well...I don't.
