Security programs/tools you couldn't live without

Postby jd2kuk » Sun May 25, 2008 2:29 pm

The title pretty much says it all: what security applications/tools could you not conduct your life without having? This could be from any category- IDS, anti-virus, vunerability scanners- anything.

I'm going to be boring here- ping ;)

Backtrack.
If I'm stuck on Windows, Wireshark, Cain, and Firefox.

Aye, totally agree about backtrack!

I actually have a virtual version of backtrack that runs within windows, so that I can get access to all the good tools whilst I'm doing other stuff

What, a Backtrack install inside a VM, or cygwin'd versions of the tools? If it's a VM, then that's nice, but you won't always have access to it. The Astalavista security DVD (v5) is a nice collection of mostly Windows stuff, which could probably work as a replacement for Backtrack.

It's a VM. ;)

And that sounds interesting...

Yeah, it has something like 2.5k tools/exploits on it. Was very hard to get hold of though, but it's probably got to the public warez sites by now. Give it a try.

Another tool for the list is perl. Sometimes, there isn't something out there for exactly what you need, and if you ca just quickly throw together a script for it, it can be a godsend. Especially useful when dealing with web based stuff.

Hackbar (FF extention) is also very useful.

I may have to take a look at that then... ;)

Aye, I know of quite a few tools which run under perl too, like nikto (although I do have wikto, which doesn't require perl...)
