Time for an upgraded CAPTCHA

Postby cheesepuff » Sun May 17, 2009 12:32 pm

We really need a better captcha, one that wont get owned by bots in 3 seconds.
Hopefully someone cna get ReCAPTCHA to work on phpBB

CAPTCHA's do not work, and if we use something that is used elsewhere, spambots will crack it, and then we get the same spam we had before.

In my experience, the best way to block spambots is a simple question/answer on the registration form. Since it would be unique to Xatrix, no spambot would be coded to be able to answer it, and this site isn't big enough for spammers to bother modifying their bots for. It also acts as a noob-filter. Something like:

'Which OS uses Domain Controllers?' => 'Windows'
'What is Sun Microsystem's OS called?' => 'Solaris'
'Who created the x86 architecture' => 'Intel'

This will keep out spambots, and people who are too moronic to do a google search for 'Domain Controller' or 'x86', killing two birds with one stone. On another forum I setup, using this style of spambot protection, I see 10-20 attempted registrations a day, and not a single one manages to get through.

No, don't use captcha!

What you need, as muto rightly pointed out, is a question/answer box.
These always work (if setup correctly) :P

I have read what you guys suggested with the question instead of captcha, and I have forwarded the idea to Phiber.

It's good to start a simple thread that will change a forum.

I've seen a website that asks you to enter a captcha code to enter it but it turns out that it loads that from a forum to the un-suspected person who enters the correct stuff and then the spam bot can get in
Usually the website is advertised for giving free stuff or something amazing so stupid people click it and help the spam bots
