Actually, the reason they switched to intel was because the power consumption of PowerPC chips was hideous- putting what would now be a G6 in a laptop would have just eaten the battery (whilst getting hot enough to cook on it ;) ). The intel chips had a much higher performance per watt rating, so they went in that direction.

Although there probably was some monetary motivation :P
